New York City Health Department Gives Award to Academy for Excellence in Scholarship NEW YORK CITY, Dec. 11--The New York Academy of Medicine received a 2003 Excellence in Health and Mental Hygiene Award on Dec. 11 from the city Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. The Academy's award was for "scholarship." In presenting the award, Associate Health Commissioner Lloyd Sederer, M.D., noted the fine and consistent research work of the Academy, particularly the post-Sept. 11 analyses of the disaster's impact on New Yorkers and residents of surrounding communities. Academy Senior Vice President Alan Fleischman, M.D., accepted the award "on behalf of all the epidemiologists, health policy analysts, and social scientists who work tirelessly to develop data and provide interventions to enhance the health of all New Yorkers." Dr. Fleischman noted the rapid and sustained response of Academy researchers to the need for information on the health impacts of Sept. 11, and praised their continued commitment to excellence in investigations concerning urban health issues. The Academy was among 11 institutions and individuals to receive awards at the evening ceremony, held at the Surrogate Court building on Chambers Street in lower Manhattan.
